Police in Wakiso District have taken a 38-year-old woman into custody following allegations that she subjected her two children to severe physical torture, including beating and burning them with a heated knife.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Rachel Kawala identified the suspect as Sophia Nasanga, a resident of Kireka Biira in Nakabugo Parish. According to police, the arrest followed a tip-off on October 28, 2026, alerting authorities to the brutal abuse inside the home.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the acts, justifying her actions by claiming the children were disrespectful and had stolen Shs 5,000 from her. Law enforcement confirmed that Nasanga remains detained as investigations proceed ahead of her court appearance.

Local resident Paul Lule explained that neighbors raised the alarm after learning of the children’s ordeal, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. Community members expressed deep outrage, noting that this was not the first time the suspect had allegedly abused the minors. Neighbors reported a similar incident last month, after which the suspect briefly fled to evade local authorities.

Additionally, residents alleged that the children’s father regularly sends money for upkeep, but the suspect allegedly mismanages the funds instead of providing for the household. Child abuse remains a critical concern in Uganda, with the Police Annual Crime Report for 2025 documenting 710 cases of child abuse and torture nationwide.
