Africa’s historic moment has finally arrived as Senegal opens the 2026 Youth Olympic Games at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium. Uganda has proudly sent a delegation of 25 athletes to compete across seven sports, including rowing, table tennis, rugby sevens, badminton, swimming, athletics, and road cycling.

For several Ugandan competitors, the action begins before the official opening ceremony even takes place. US-born rower Marcel Andrew Otim has been adjusting to the intense 90-degree heat at Saly Beach West, roughly 80 kilometers south of Dakar. The 17-year-old is competing in the coastal beach sprint time trials, supported by national rower Elijah Namunyolu as his boat handler. Otim views the tournament as a vital stepping stone toward his ultimate dream of reaching the 2032 Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, table tennis action gets underway at the Dakar Expo Center in Diamniadio. Young prodigy Joseph Sebatindira, an 11-year-old former world number one in his age group, teams up with 16-year-old Jemimah Nakawala for the singles and mixed doubles events. Sebatindira has been utilizing the Olympic village gym facilities to build his strength alongside the rowing contingent.

Because sports like rugby sevens, badminton, and swimming commence immediately, many Ugandan athletes face an early night following the opening ceremony to rest up for their respective events. Competitors have praised the village accommodations and air-conditioned amenities for making the quick transition smooth despite the challenging weather conditions.

Historically, the Youth Olympics serve as a crucial launchpad for Ugandan sports stars. Past medalists like Sarah Chelangat and Oscar Chelimo have used the platform to transition into global athletics success, inspiring the current crop of youngsters in Dakar.
