Consumers across Uganda will soon dig deeper into their pockets to purchase bread. The Uganda Bakers Association has announced that the prices of bread will increase starting Monday, November 2, following a surge in the cost of essential raw materials and transport.

According to the association, the wholesale price for a one-kilogram loaf will rise from Shs5,500, with recommended retail prices expected to hit at least Shs6,500. Meanwhile, a standard 500-gram loaf will jump from Shs3,000 to between Shs3,300 and Shs3,500.

Gaster Lule Ntakke, the chairperson of the association, explained that the adjustments followed a general meeting where members reviewed operational expenses. He noted that bakeries can no longer absorb the escalating costs of wheat flour, yeast, and transport without compromising their business sustainability.

Ntakke appealed to the public for understanding, assuring consumers that bakeries remain dedicated to maintaining quality and adhering to standards set by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards. The price adjustment coincides with wider economic challenges, notably mounting transport expenses linked to rising fuel prices that have recently drawn scrutiny from Parliament.
