The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has encouraged young girls to embrace Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) while looking beyond traditional roles when considering careers in the aviation sector.

Speaking at the third Girls in Aviation Day held at Entebbe International Airport, UCAA Acting Director General Olive B. Lumonya noted that the aviation industry requires a diverse array of professionals. More than 100 students from 10 schools attended the event, which was organized by UCAA in partnership with AirServ, Chiedza CheAfrica, and Women in Aviation International.

Lumonya, represented by Sabah Ahmed, the UCAA Director for Human Resource and Administration, stressed that aviation extends far beyond piloting aircraft. Students had the opportunity to interact with female experts working in air traffic control, aeronautical information management, communications, navigation and surveillance engineering, wildlife management, architecture, and accounting.

Encouraging the students to shed fears regarding mathematics or physics, Lumonya emphasized that engineering and technology are not exclusively for boys. She urged parents and teachers to actively support girls pursuing STEM pathways and to reject limiting gender stereotypes.

Over the past three years, the Girls in Aviation initiative has successfully introduced roughly 300 girls to the vast opportunities available in the sector, fostering the next generation of female aviation professionals in alignment with global programs.
