Spain has entered a period of three days of national mourning following a horrific rail disaster that claimed the lives of at least 68 people. The tragic collision ranks among the worst rail accidents in modern European history, leaving dozens of others injured and countless families devastated.

Emergency services worked tirelessly through the night under powerful floodlights, deploying drones, helicopters, and hundreds of personnel to cut open mangled metal carriages and clear debris. Witnesses at the scene in Toledo described harrowing scenes of smoke, fire, and trapped passengers.

The disaster unfolded when a state-owned Renfe train traveling from Madrid to Seville collided with a stationary Iryo train. According to Spain’s transport minister, Óscar Puente, the private Iryo train had stalled on the tracks due to a computer failure carrying 147 passengers. Preliminary findings suggest that a control center in Madrid made an inexplicable decision to clear the following train to move without speed restrictions.

Audio recordings indicate that controllers cleared the high-speed train to proceed despite another train stalled directly ahead. The sheer force of the impact caused several carriages to plunge down an embankment, sparking a fire in one of the cars.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez lamented the tragedy, stating that lives have been shattered and families torn apart. He also noted the unacceptability of suffering two major rail disasters this year, following a January crash near Córdoba that killed 46 people. Political parties have largely suspended election campaigning, though the far-right Vox party opted out of the suspension, criticizing the state of the nation’s rail infrastructure.
