President Yoweri Museveni has called upon the Christian community across Uganda to embrace exemplary living and actively mentor the younger generation. The President emphasized that the profound sacrifices made by the nation’s early martyrs should continuously serve as a timeless model of unwavering faith, commitment, and dedicated service to humanity.
His message was delivered by the Minister in Charge of the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, during the solemn 141st commemoration of Bishop James Hannington. The historical event took place at Kyando Village in Mayuge District, marking more than a century since the English Anglican missionary was killed on October 29, 1885.
Historical accounts indicate that Hannington, the first Anglican bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa, was detained and executed in Busoga amid political suspicions from Buganda’s leadership under Kabaka Mwanga II and local chief Luba. His tragic death remains a foundational pillar in the rich history of Christianity in Uganda, comparable in significance to the annual Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations held every June.
Beyond spiritual reflection, President Museveni used the platform to acknowledge the invaluable role played by religious institutions in driving national development. He commended faith-based organizations for their continuous contributions to public education, healthcare delivery, and the moral shaping of communities, particularly in underserved rural areas.
According to the President, achieving sustainable national development requires a collaborative effort among all stakeholders. While the government focuses on delivering security, infrastructure, and economic growth, religious bodies remain essential partners in nurturing a morally upright and resilient society.
