The Nnaabagereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda, has voiced deep concern over the silent suffering endured by many girls facing emotional and mental health challenges. Speaking at the Buganda Girls’ Child Convention held at Bulange, Mengo, she emphasized that numerous young girls navigate difficult life experiences without access to trusted mentors or guides.

According to the Nnaabagereka, fear and stigma prevent many girls from seeking help. Because these inner struggles do not always leave visible physical scars, they are frequently overlooked by society. She connected Christian teachings about bearing one another’s burdens with the traditional African value of Obuntu Bulamu, urging communities to foster environments where young people feel safe to speak out.

Echoing these sentiments, Buganda’s Prime Minister (Katikkiro), Charles Peter Mayiga, stressed that the future of the kingdom depends heavily on the empowerment and protection of its youth, particularly girls. Under the convention’s theme, “A Well-Prepared Girl Is Hope of Buganda Kingdom,” Mayiga noted that nurturing strong family units and equipping girls with leadership skills remains critical during adolescence.

Meanwhile, youth leader Derrick Kavuma warned against the rising misuse of digital platforms, cautioning that social media is occasionally weaponized to disrespect cultural institutions rather than foster positive education and enterprise. Stakeholders at the event pointed to broader demographic data, such as recent census figures indicating high teen pregnancy rates and barriers to education, reinforcing the urgent need for comprehensive support systems.
