Uganda’s commercial justice system has achieved a significant milestone after the Commercial Division of the High Court successfully unlocked approximately Shs20.6 billion back into the national economy. This financial breakthrough was realized during a specialized mediation fortnight held in August.
A total of 229 commercial disputes were resolved through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms rather than lengthy full trials. These cases primarily involved complex matters related to trade, corporate governance, and construction disputes.
The Judiciary has been intensifying its efforts to clear a substantial backlog that currently exceeds 8,000 pending cases. By embracing mediation, the court system provides businesses with a faster and more collaborative path to resolution, allowing companies to recover crucial capital instead of having funds tied up in protracted litigation.
Legal experts note that alternative dispute resolution not only revitalizes business cash flow by settling financial disagreements efficiently, but it also reduces the heavy administrative burden traditionally placed on commercial courts.
