Tensions have flared up in the Teso sub-region following a stern warning from former State Minister for Works Musa Ecweru directed at retired Lt Gen Peter Elwelu. Mr Ecweru, a prominent former commander of the Arrow Boys militia, issued a 24-hour deadline for the retired general to surrender to security authorities or face a lethal hunt by forces.
Speaking during a press conference held in Soroti City, Mr Ecweru stressed that any efforts to launch a rebellion or compromise the hard-earned peace in the Teso region would be met with swift and decisive action. He urged Lt Gen Elwelu, who previously served as the Deputy Commander of Defence Forces, to immediately abandon any alleged subversive activities.
“My prayer to him is that if it is true, he should abandon that prayer before evening today,” Mr Ecweru stated during the briefing, addressing growing concerns over regional stability.
Recognizing the potential fears regarding law enforcement, Mr Ecweru suggested safe avenues for surrender. He advised Lt Gen Elwelu to seek refuge or mediation through respected figures, such as Bishop Joseph Oliach Eciru of the Soroti Catholic Diocese or Vice President Jessica Alupo. These leaders could facilitate a direct link to President Yoweri Museveni to negotiate safety or request a presidential pardon.
Local leaders are closely monitoring the unfolding situation as security remains on high alert across the sub-region following the ultimatum.
