Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has thrown his weight behind a new initiative to establish community youth parliaments across Uganda. The project aims to provide young people with a dedicated platform to voice community concerns and actively participate in governance and decision-making processes.

The initiative is spearheaded by the Network for Active Citizens in Uganda, working alongside the Danish Network for Local Youth Councils. During a meeting with a delegation from these organizations, Tayebwa emphasized that the proposed youth parliaments would bridge the gap between grassroots concerns and national policy discussions.

According to Tayebwa, the program will serve as a vital incubator for future leaders. By starting participation at the community level, young citizens can gradually scale their leadership capabilities to the national stage. Other notable figures, including Omoro County MP Andrew Oulanyah and Arua Central Division MP Muzaid Khemis, were also present to support the discussions.

Tayebwa expressed gratitude for Denmark’s continued backing of youth development programs in Uganda and assured stakeholders of his office’s commitment to assisting the initiative. The broader program seeks to elevate youth voices in public affairs, ensuring that the younger demographic can meaningfully engage with policymakers on issues that directly impact their livelihoods and futures.
