A 36-year-old Chinese national found himself in legal trouble after being arraigned in a Kampala court over a disputed financial transaction involving a significant sum of money.
Cheng Yi Wei appeared before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court, where he faced a formal count of theft. According to court proceedings presided over by Senior Principal Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko, the accused is alleged to have stolen Shs210 million from a fellow countryman, Gong Cheng Tao.
The charges stem from what investigators describe as a botched foreign currency exchange deal between the two individuals. During the court session, the formal theft charge was read and explained to the accused.
In response to the allegations brought against him by the state, Wei entered a plea of not guilty before the magistrate.
