An official government anti-corruption rally in Rukungiri District took an unexpected political turn when local residents began repeatedly chanting the name of detained opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye.
The event, which took place at the Rukungiri Main Stadium, was originally organised by the Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi. The primary objective was to mobilise district leaders and citizens to combat corruption and improve the execution of government initiatives.
Instead of focusing solely on service delivery, the gathering became a platform for public concern over Besigye’s ongoing detention. The continuous chants filled the stadium, forcing the minister to address the elephant in the room and appeal for calm among the frustrated attendees.
Responding to the crowd, Minister Balaam assured the public that diplomatic and political efforts were underway to secure the veteran politician’s freedom.
“I want to call on the public to remain calm as the discussions continue. There are ongoing discussions aimed at securing Dr Besigye’s release,” Balaam stated during the rally.
He further disclosed that these negotiations are being spearheaded by General Salim Saleh, though he did not elaborate on specific timelines or the exact parties involved in the dialogue. Observers noted that the minister’s remarks were aimed at easing rising tensions and reassuring a public deeply invested in the opposition leader’s fate.
Dr. Besigye remains a towering and influential figure in Uganda’s political landscape, and his legal troubles continue to dominate public discourse. The interruption in Rukungiri highlights how grievances regarding political detentions frequently intersect with ordinary civic meetings across the country.
