Construction of the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City is progressing rapidly, with the overall project now reaching 85 percent completion. According to the project manager at SAMCO Construction, Mohamed Nazir, the remaining tasks are primarily focused on landscaping and finishing activities in Zone Two.
Project officials note that structural works on the main stadium are largely finished, and work crews are currently multitasking to meet the January 2027 handover deadline. Ongoing activities include installing doors and windows and undertaking external finishing on the buildings located in the second zone.
The development is split into two distinct zones. Zone One houses the main stadium, entryways, parking facilities, and surrounding landscaping. Meanwhile, Zone Two features a 2,000-seater indoor arena, a 60-bed hotel, a clubhouse, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and multipurpose sports areas. The massive complex is also secured by roughly 1.5 kilometers of perimeter fencing featuring 23 gates alongside a 1.8-kilometer ring road.
Subcontractor Integral Group has finished work on the playing surfaces and athletic installations. Engineer Emre Erisik stated that the main pitch and training pitch installations are complete, with the current focus shifting to maintaining the newly planted hybrid natural grass and artificial fiber surfaces. Irrigation systems are currently in active use to ensure healthy germination.
Named after Uganda’s legendary 1972 Olympic gold medalist John Akii-Bua, the modern sports complex was launched by President Yoweri Museveni in January 2025 following a contract signed with Egypt’s SAMCO National Construction Company. Once open, the facility aims to transform sports development in the Lango Sub-region by offering world-class training and competition venues.
