The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has successfully captured and relocated two crocodiles following a series of deadly attacks along the shores of Lake Kyoga in Buyende District. The operation brought a momentary sigh of relief to terrified fishing communities that have lived in constant fear over the past five months.

Buyende District Woman MP Sarah Namulondo had previously raised urgent concerns in Parliament regarding the escalating crisis. According to reports, flooding has pushed aquatic animals closer to human settlements as reptiles search for food. The situation led to tragic incidents, including the death of 48-year-old fisherman Joseph Batuli, whose remains were later recovered from papyrus reeds.

In response to the public outcry, a specialized UWA team led by Oswald Tumanya conducted a two-day hunt in Nkooke Parish. The captured reptiles, with their mouths secured and eyes covered, were transported to the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre in Entebbe. However, authorities noted that a third massive crocodile, estimated to weigh over 400 kilograms, remains at large after dragging away setting traps.

Acting Buyende District Vermin Control Coordinator Joseph Muguude reported that six individuals lost their lives in the greater Kagulu Sub-county between March and October 2026, with over fifteen others sustaining severe, disabling injuries. Muguude explained that the spike in aggression coincides with the crocodiles’ breeding season, urging locals to steer clear of known reptile habitats.

Meanwhile, local leaders and residents have called upon the government to provide compensation for the victims and families affected by the wildlife conflict.
