Uganda has joined fellow member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in pressing for more robust international collaboration to tackle corruption, recover stolen assets, and enhance information sharing among global law enforcement agencies.

The commitment was solidified during the Third Ministerial Meeting of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities of OIC Member States, held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The gathering brought together prominent anti-corruption heads and public service integrity officials from various participating nations to deliberate on modern transparency hurdles.

Uganda was officially represented at the high-level summit by a delegation comprising Inspector General of Government Lady Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala, Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity Akello Rose Lilly, and Director of Public Prosecutions Lino Anguzu.

During the proceedings, delegates emphasized the urgent requirement for coordinated international action, particularly when dealing with illicit financial flows, complex business transactions, and stolen assets that cross multiple national jurisdictions. A focal point of the discussions was promoting the implementation of the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Convention on Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Cooperation, which was adopted in Mauritania in 2023.

The convention serves as a vital tool for improving joint investigations into corruption-related offenses. Furthermore, member states resolved to enhance intelligence exchange, better identify the beneficial owners of suspicious assets and business entities, and boost the OIC’s overall standing in global anti-corruption frameworks.

As part of future commitments, the forum agreed to host the Second International Forum for Promoting Integrity in the Tourism Sector in Morocco in 2027, expanding oversight into vulnerable industries. Uganda’s participation underscores the nation’s ongoing dedication to strengthening legal frameworks, fostering international partnerships, and promoting public sector accountability.
