Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has put forward a proposal to establish a special reconciliation committee composed of legislators from all political factions. The initiative aims to tackle escalating political tensions and recent acts of violence across the country.

Speaking during a plenary sitting, Tayebwa voiced deep concern that political divisions have deteriorated to the point where Members of Parliament can no longer safely attend the funeral services of their peers. He pointedly questioned the trajectory of the nation if leaders are too fragmented to mourn together.

The proposal was prompted by a disturbing incident at the burial of former Busiro South MP Charles Matovu. During the ceremony, Kibuku County Representative Herbert Kinobere was attacked and chased away by hostile mourners, with his vehicle stoned and vandalised. Meanwhile, the current Busiro South MP, Kenan Opio, stayed away entirely out of fear for his safety.

To address the rift, Tayebwa suggested that the Government and Opposition Chief Whips each select a five-member team. This group would engage in dialogue and formulate strategies to reduce animosity among lawmakers and their supporters, setting an example of unity for the wider public.

Cabinet ministers and opposition legislators alike echoed these sentiments during the session. State Minister for Public Service Lydia Wanyoto noted that MPs expressing public condolences often face insults and false accusations. Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi and ICT Minister Kasule Lumumba both emphasized that partisan politics should never transform colleagues into enemies, urging leaders to heal the divisions stemming from past elections.

Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze also weighed in, asserting that chasing mourners away contradicts core Ugandan cultural values and calling for broader national dialogue beyond the walls of Parliament.
