President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently welcomed the European Union Special Representative for the Great Lakes Region, Mr. Johan Borgstam, for a high-level meeting at State House in Entebbe. The discussions centered primarily on regional peace and security, with a strong focus on the persistent conflict affecting the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

During the engagement, President Museveni strongly advocated for political dialogue as the definitive and only viable solution to resolve the crisis in eastern DRC. He expressed deep concern over the ongoing suffering of local communities, attributing the prolonged instability to a reluctance among conflicting factions to embrace peaceful negotiations.

“The only solution is talk. Stop all these threats and wars and everything else and talk, because it is unfair that the people of Congo are suffering because of this stubbornness to refuse to talk,” President Museveni stated during the meeting. He further underscored that the citizens of Congo deserve lasting peace and the democratic opportunity to shape their own future through peaceful political processes.

In response, EU Envoy Johan Borgstam praised President Museveni for his extensive leadership and deep experience in handling regional matters. Acknowledging Uganda’s pivotal role, the EU delegation noted that they sought the President’s wise counsel and comprehensive analysis to better navigate the complex security challenges facing the wider Great Lakes region.

The diplomatic gathering was also attended by key European Union officials, including H.E. Jan Sadek, the EU Ambassador to Uganda; H.E. Eole Sury, the Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Uganda; and Mr. Tristan Terryn, the Political Adviser to the EU Special Representative for the Great Lakes Region.
