Security forces in Mityana District have successfully intercepted an armed robbery gang, arresting one suspect and recovering two firearms, three pangas, and a motorcycle after a late-night operation in Butayunja Sub-county.
The swift intervention followed a violent raid on Monday night at the residence of Ibrahim Sande in Nakulamudde Village, Maanyi Sub-county. According to law enforcement, a group of four men stormed the home around 10:20 pm, threatening the occupants before robbing them of cash and mobile phones. The assailants also targeted a local businesswoman, taking her money and smartphone before tying up their victims and fleeing on a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle.
Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, SSP Lameck Kigozi, reported that officers attached to Kitongo Police Station intercepted the suspects during a routine midnight patrol in Nawangiri Village. A scuffle ensued when officers attempted to make arrests, allowing three of the suspects to escape into the darkness. However, officers successfully apprehended one suspect, identified as Abass Namusanga.
A search of a sack tied to the impounded motorcycle led to the recovery of the weapons. Namusanga is currently being held at Mityana Central Police Station as security forces launch a manhunt for his accomplices.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the criminal gang operates under the guise of coffee dealers. They reportedly monitor local villages and coffee stores to identify farmers and traders carrying large sums of cash after selling their produce, using this intelligence to plan home invasions.
In response to the growing threat, SSP Kigozi advised community members, particularly coffee farmers and traders, to avoid keeping large amounts of money at home. He recommended using safer financial alternatives like commercial banks and mobile money services.
Meanwhile, local leaders have called for enhanced community safety measures. Butayunja Sub-county LC3 Chairperson Muhammad Ssebimba expressed concern over rising crime rates, while Mityana Resident District Commissioner Joseph Musisi urged residents to donate land for a new police station to improve emergency response times.
