The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has taken decisive action against top education officials at the prestigious Ntare School. Current headteacher Saul Rwamporo, former headteacher Jimmy Turyagenda, and former school typist Peace Kebirungi were arrested over allegations of abuse of office and causing a financial loss of Shs110.8 million to the government.
According to investigations by the IG’s Mbarara Regional Office, the scandal centers around Kebirungi, who allegedly presented a false university admission letter in October 2015 to secure study leave with pay. Investigators report that she subsequently absconded from duty but continued to draw a government salary for nearly a decade, spanning from September 2015 to August 2024.
The two successive headteachers are accused of deliberately concealing her absence. Instead of reporting the breach, Turyagenda and Rwamporo reportedly authorized additional allowances to Kebirungi drawn directly from school fees, maintaining the illusion that she remained an active member of staff.
The scheme allegedly extended into retirement when Kebirungi applied for early retirement in 2023. Despite her prolonged absence and ineligibility, Rwamporo forwarded the application. By the time she officially retired in 2024, Kebirungi had reportedly secured terminal benefits, including gratuity and monthly pension payouts, pushing the total irregular financial loss to Shs110,877,900 by February 2026.
The Inspectorate of Government emphasized that the arrests highlight a critical need to safeguard public resources and hold public officers accountable. The suspects were transferred to Kampala and are expected to face formal charges at the Anti-Corruption Court.
Authorities noted that the allegations are yet to be tested in a court of law, and the suspects remain innocent until proven guilty. Read more details about this developing story on the Nile Post.
