Mityana District has officially launched a distribution exercise providing free mosquito nets to registered residents as part of ongoing national efforts to curb the spread of malaria. The initiative aims to improve household access to insecticide-treated nets and safeguard local communities against the persistent public health threat.

During the rollout, Waswa Chrizestom Buyondo, the Assistant to the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) in Mityana, strongly urged beneficiaries to use the nets consistently every night. He issued a stern warning against diverting the nets to alternative activities, such as building enclosures for poultry, noting that individuals caught misusing the government-supplied materials could face legal consequences.

Local leadership is taking an active role in ensuring compliance at the grassroots level. Isaac Ssenyonjo, the chairperson of Kayunga Central Village, announced that village leaders will conduct follow-up visits to monitor whether households are actually sleeping under the nets.

Malaria continues to pose a significant health challenge across Uganda, making consistent use of insecticide-treated nets a critical line of defense. Authorities in Mityana hope that through strict monitoring and community cooperation, the distribution campaign will drastically reduce malaria infections and improve overall public health in the district.
