Passengers aboard a luxury residential cruise ship embarking on a multi-year voyage around the globe have been left stranded in Cambodia after the vessel’s operators abruptly suspended operations. The decision came in response to skyrocketing global fuel costs, which rendered the ambitious journey financially unsustainable.

The US-based operator of the Villa Vie Odyssey stated that monthly fuel costs per cabin in parts of Asia surged dramatically from $1,800 to as much as $8,000 following conflict-driven spikes in global fuel prices earlier in the year. Although the company attempted to cut consumption by slowing down itineraries and extending port stays, management noted that these steps could not bridge the massive financial gap. Passing the full increase on to the residents was deemed unrealistic, leading to the sudden shutdown.

Around 200 passengers were reportedly onboard when they received orders to disembark at the Cambodian port city of Sihanoukville with mere hours of notice. The unexpected halt brought an end to a journey that had already surpassed 750 days at sea, part of a planned 3.5-year itinerary covering nearly 150 countries. The operating company announced it would spend the next 60 days pursuing restructuring and recapitalization, though officials cautioned that no outcome is guaranteed.

Disembarked travelers described feelings of heartbreak and disbelief as their floating community came to an abrupt halt. While some passengers immediately began making plans to travel independently or settle together elsewhere in Southeast Asia, others chose to remain in local hotels, holding onto faint hopes that a miracle investor might emerge and the Odyssey might sail again.
