Age is certainly no barrier to entrepreneurship, as demonstrated by 65-year-old Immaculate Nakayiwa Kimmula. Through her enterprise, JIMAC Cleaning and Waste Management Limited, she collects rubbish from households and businesses across Kampala while simultaneously addressing poor urban sanitation.
Nakayiwa’s journey into the waste sector began during her time as a public health leader in Kyebando, where she witnessed firsthand the severe challenges communities faced regarding garbage disposal. After working briefly with an established waste operator, she recognized a viable business opportunity.
To fund her vision, Nakayiwa diligently saved Shs10 million with FINCA Uganda. She also participated in the lender’s Waste-to-Wealth Initiative training, which opened her eyes to advanced recycling practices. Seeking to expand her capacity, she applied for a Women Empowerment Loan and swiftly secured Shs20 million within three days. Combined with her personal savings, the financing allowed her to purchase a crucial garbage truck.
Today, JIMAC operates two trucks and provides steady employment for 12 staff members, including drivers, supervisors, and loaders. The company serves areas such as Kyebando, Kisalosalo, Kalerwe, and Makerere. Beyond routine collection, Nakayiwa actively promotes household waste separation to ease recycling and protect the environment.
Looking ahead, Nakayiwa aims to establish a dedicated waste sorting and recycling facility, alongside a coffee and poultry farm. Henry Kiyaga, FINCA Uganda’s Women Empowerment Loan Product Manager, noted that Nakayiwa’s success highlights the powerful impact financial access can have on community development and job creation.
