The Ugandan government is stepping in to address a growing leadership crisis within the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, triggered by the prolonged illness of the Omukama (King), Dr. Solomon Gafabusa Agutamba Rukirabasaija Iguru I.
Authorities have announced plans to convene the first-ever high-level consultative meeting involving traditional leaders, members of the royal family, and key stakeholders. The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has set the meeting for November 7, 2026, to be held at the Karuziika Palace in Hoima City.
The intervention follows escalating tensions and clashes between kingdom officials, including Prime Minister Andrew Byakutaga and other palace figures, over administrative authority and the day-to-day running of the cultural institution. Concerns have mounted as the leadership row threatens unity within the region.
King Iguru was previously airlifted from Karuziika Palace to Kampala aboard a presidential helicopter in October 2024 for medical attention. Although he was returned to the palace in November of the same year, where he currently remains, his ongoing health challenges have created a leadership vacuum that various factions have sought to navigate, leading to internal friction.
The upcoming meeting aims to foster dialogue among all concerned parties, resolve conflicting interests, and restore administrative stability to the kingdom. Government officials hope the engagement will chart a clear path forward for the cultural institution amidst ongoing regional developments.
