Drama unfolded at the burial of former Buyamba County Member of Parliament, Amos Mandela Mugerwa, when angry mourners disrupted proceedings over condolence messages sent by ruling party leaders.
The final send-off, held in Kibaati Village, Kajju Parish, in Kacheera Sub-county, Rakai District, drew hundreds of residents gathered to pay their last respects to the well-known two-term legislator.
Tensions flared when Kalungu West MP Gonzaga Ssewungu took to the podium. Representing the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), Mr Ssewungu stepped up to deliver official condolences on behalf of Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa.
However, the atmosphere quickly soured when Mr Ssewungu announced that he had also been asked to convey separate condolence messages from current Buyamba County MP Gyaviira Ssemwanga and Rakai District Woman MP Juliet Ssuubi Kinyamatama. Both local representatives belong to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Upon hearing the names of the NRM legislators, the crowd erupted in loud heckling and outright rejection, forcing a temporary halt to the funeral speeches as organizers struggled to restore order.
