The Court of Appeal has firmly rejected a bid for sentence reduction, upholding a 27-year jail term for Joseph Mugarura, also known as Kyangwa. Mugarura was convicted for the brutal murder of his colleague, Richard Katambira, back in September 2015.

According to the prosecution’s evidence presented during the trial, the tragic incident was fueled by intense jealousy. Mugarura suspected that Katambira was having an affair with his wife. The situation escalated dramatically when prosecution established that Mugarura had openly threatened to kill Katambira just two days before the fatal attack took place.

Aside from taking his colleague’s life, the convict also stole chickens and food belonging to the victim during the ordeal.

Following his initial conviction, Mugarura approached the appellate court seeking leniency. His legal arguments rested on the premise that he was a first-time offender with dependent family responsibilities, pleading that the 27-year sentence handed down by the lower court was excessively harsh.

However, the appellate judges found no compelling reasons to alter the punishment, ultimately dismissing his appeal and sealing his 27-year prison term.
