The Court of Appeal has maintained the murder convictions of three men responsible for the 2014 killing of prominent Lira businesswoman Susan Akidi Eryau, while granting them relief by reducing their prison terms and compensation amounts.

Akidi, who owned the Good-Lord Hardware Shop along Juba Road in Lira, was fatally shot on January 6, 2014. The tragic attack happened as she arrived at her marital home in Ireda Lumumba, situated in what is now Lira City East Division.

During the initial legal proceedings, the appellants challenged the trial judge’s decisions. They argued that the court relied on insufficient evidence, ignored their alibis, and overlooked procedural irregularities regarding the absence of assessors.

In the recent ruling, the appellate justices upheld the core convictions but revised the penalties. The court ordered each of the three convicts to serve 40 years in prison for murder, 25 years for aggravated robbery, and 25 years for attempted murder. Crucially, the justices directed that these prison terms run concurrently, calculated from the original date of their conviction.

Furthermore, the court scaled down the financial compensation initially awarded to the grieving family of the late trader. Legal analysts note that concurrent sentencing provides substantial relief to the convicts compared to consecutive terms.
