Balancing Environmental Protection and Clean Energy Access in Uganda

Uganda must ensure clean and affordable energy alternatives are genuinely accessible before implementing any total bans on charcoal to protect both the environment and vulnerable livelihoods. Environmental conservation is a pressing concern for Uganda as forest cover continues to dwindle due to widespread charcoal burning and biomass dependency. However, discussions surrounding a complete ban on charcoal must be handled with careful strategic planning.

While protecting ecosystems is vital, millions of urban and rural households rely on charcoal for their daily cooking needs because alternatives remain out of reach. For many low-income families, clean energy options such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or electricity are simply too expensive.

Furthermore, the charcoal trade supports numerous livelihoods along its value chain, from rural producers to transporters and urban vendors. Simply outlawing the commodity without providing viable economic alternatives risks plunging these vulnerable workers into deeper poverty.

Before enforcing strict prohibitions, the government must actively invest in making clean energy affordable and reliable. Subsidizing cooking gas, improving electricity access, and promoting efficient biomass technologies are crucial preliminary steps.

Uganda needs a balanced transition policy that safeguards nature while supporting citizens through sustainable energy adoption. For more details, read the original report on Daily Monitor.
