Renowned Ugandan comedian and Comedy Store founder Alex Muhangi has spoken out against the declining standards of local comedy, attributing the slump to weak writing and a general lack of creativity among contemporary performers.

Having spent nearly two decades navigating the entertainment industry, Muhangi has played a pivotal role in offering platforms for comics and artists alike. However, during a recent television interview, he pointed out a stark contrast between past generations and today’s acts.

According to Muhangi, early comedians were forced to constantly innovate, producing fresh material on a weekly basis because repeating jokes was simply not an option. While he acknowledges that today’s comics put in some effort, he believes they easily grow too comfortable, resulting in a drop in overall quality.

“Back then, we couldn’t repeat jokes, and we would write new content every week. Today’s comedians are working hard, but more needs to be done. They get too comfortable, and this has led to the level of comedy dropping,” Muhangi explained.

The veteran comedian also addressed the rising trend of integrating musicians into comedy show lineups. He noted that while this strategy helps draw larger crowds and boost ticket sales, it underscores a reliance on external talent rather than pure comedic strength.
