Trouble has reportedly engulfed the Uganda National Mining Company (UNMC) following directives from the Inspectorate of Government to suspend key executives. The dramatic turn of events unfolded at the International Conference Centre, Serena Hotel, when UNMC Chief Executive Officer Dr Gerald Banaga-Baingi hastily exited Victoria Hall.
At around 6:30 pm that evening, the ombudsman’s communications team distributed an official statement instructing Ms Maria Kiwanuka, the acting board chairperson of UNMC, to immediately interdict Dr Banaga-Baingi. Alongside the CEO, the directive also targeted the company’s Corporate and Legal Affairs Officer, Ms Lelia Bwambale.
According to the Inspectorate, the suspensions are necessary to facilitate comprehensive investigations into mounting allegations of maladministration, financial mismanagement, and abuse of office within the state-backed mining entity. The sudden development highlights growing governance challenges at the institution as oversight bodies step up scrutiny of public sector entities.
