Service delivery in Tororo District has come to a standstill following the interdiction of more than 30 key officials over allegations of corruption, abuse of office, extortion, and the illegal sale of government land and jobs.

Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi issued the directive during his Bukedi anti-corruption tour at the Children’s Lions Park. The sweeping crackdown targeted multiple critical dockets, leaving offices across the education, health, finance, procurement, and lands departments locked and residents stranded at the headquarters.

The swift enforcement has created administrative chaos. Education services have been heavily impacted, with dozens of head teachers unable to submit Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) data because the District Education Officer and other signatories were removed. Local leaders, including Tororo LCV Chairperson John Okeya, acknowledged the deep-rooted corruption but criticized the unphased approach of removing so many core staff members at once without leaving transitional provisions.

Chief Administrative Officer Richard Wambi noted that the district is at a crossroads, attempting to fill operational gaps using junior staff while investigations by the Inspectorate of Government and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit get underway. Meanwhile, some of the affected officers have contested the directive, dismissing the sudden interdictions as an unfair witch-hunt.
