President Yoweri Museveni has called upon Somali leaders and citizens to forge a united front against the Al-Shabaab insurgency. Speaking during a meeting with visiting Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at State House Entebbe, Museveni stressed that ideological divisions and a fundamental misdiagnosis of the country’s challenges continue to hinder long-term peace and stability.
Drawing parallels with other African nations facing sectarian governance issues, Museveni warned that internal disunity among the majority ultimately allows a minority faction to maintain influence. He emphasized the necessity of proper political organization, stating that leaders must unite the many to defeat the few rather than relying on divisive approaches.
President Mohamud updated the Ugandan leader on the security situation in Somalia. He expressed deep gratitude for the sacrifices made by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) through African Union-led peace support operations. Mohamud voiced hope that Ugandan military backing would continue to help stabilize the nation against ongoing threats posed by militant groups in the Horn of Africa.
Beyond security, the two leaders explored avenues to enhance bilateral trade and economic partnerships. Discussions focused on streamlining market access for Ugandan goods, particularly coffee. Officials noted that establishing a direct Ugandan warehouse in Somalia would eliminate reliance on European intermediaries, allowing processed Ugandan coffee to reach Somali consumers more efficiently.
Bilateral ties remain robust, supported by a thriving diaspora community. According to Somali officials, approximately 8,000 Somali nationals operate businesses in Uganda, while roughly 15,000 students pursue higher education in the country. The high-level meeting concluded with commitments from both nations to deepen cooperation across both security and economic sectors.
