State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang and a retired military officer are locked in a heated dispute regarding an alleged Shs20 million debt that dates back roughly five years. The controversy centers around claims made by a retired Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer.
Retired Lt Simon Julius Engeku, who previously ran as a candidate for Kapir County in Ngora District, has accused Minister Ogwang of borrowing the substantial sum. According to the retired lieutenant, the money was taken during a public event in Soroti District that welcomed Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to the Teso sub-region.
In response to the accusations, Minister Ogwang has vehemently denied ever borrowing the Shs20 million. The minister maintains that the claims are entirely false and has threatened to pursue legal action against Mr Engeku for defamation and spreading damaging allegations regarding the purported debt.
The public disagreement highlights ongoing tensions and financial disputes often trailing high-profile political events and mobilization tours across various regions in the country. As both parties stand their ground, the fallout threatens to escalate into a formal court battle.
