Kampala University (KU) Stars have announced themselves as genuine contenders for the National Woodball League title following an impressive debut at the Uganda Prisons pavilion in Luzira. Inspired by former Ndejje University player Lillian Zawedde, the newcomers won three of their four opening fixtures to claim the early lead in the men’s standings.

Despite playing without their leading player, Brian Gwaaka, KU Stars secured convincing 3-0 victories over Bank of Uganda and Bugema University, alongside 2-1 wins against Prisons and Kisubi. They currently sit at the top of the table with eight points, level with the unbeaten Ministry of Public Service (MoPS) but ahead on fairway difference after winning 39 fairways.

The team’s strong league start follows their recent success at the 7th Kenya International Open Woodball Championship in Thika, where they captured the overall team title. Their rising prominence is further highlighted by four KU Stars players securing selection in Uganda’s squad for the 2026 Woodball World Cup in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, defending champions Uganda Prisons endured a difficult start, suffering a 2-1 defeat to the debutants. Team manager Samson Rugongeza acknowledged the early setbacks, which were compounded by the absence of key players Isaac Nabugere and Isaac Ariho. Elsewhere, Bank of Uganda has emerged as a serious threat after recruiting reigning MVP Thomas Kedi and other top talent.

In the women’s division, defending champions Ministry of Public Service commenced their campaign strongly with three wins from four matches, though they did suffer a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the surging KU Stars.
