Mourning loved ones in the West Nile region of Uganda has transformed dramatically over the decades, evolving from simple community affairs into costly undertakings that often plunge families into heavy debt.

Decades ago, between the 1960s and the late 1990s, saying goodbye to a relative was straightforward and community-driven. Death announcements were traditionally carried out by a young person riding a bicycle adorned with leaves. The messenger would signal neighbors by ringing the bicycle bell for three minutes before delivering the news, receiving a simple token of appreciation like a cock in return.

Today, however, the landscape of bereavement has changed completely. Modern funerals often begin with purchasing airtime to coordinate with relatives, paying for costly radio announcements, settling mortuary fees, and utilizing digital platforms like WhatsApp.

Furthermore, families now face mounting pressure to spend millions of shillings on feeding hundreds of mourners who gather for the send-off. These escalating financial demands mean that many households are forced to take on loans or sell valuable land just to give their loved ones a decent burial, compounding the grief of loss with long-term financial distress.
