The Ugandan government, through the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), has joined forces with the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) to map out districts most vulnerable to impending El Niño-related weather hazards.
As intense downpours continue to affect major transport routes, including recent flooding along the Kampala-Hoima Highway at the Lubigi Wetland, authorities are taking proactive measures to mitigate potential disasters.
The current rainy season, heavily influenced by El Niño patterns, gathered significant momentum in October 2026. Meteorological forecasts indicate that these heavy downpours, flash floods, and associated landslides will persist through December 2026, extending into the early months of 2027.
In response to the heightened risk levels, humanitarian organizations like the Red Cross have begun prepositioning essential emergency supplies in high-risk zones. Communities residing in low-lying areas, flood-prone valleys, and mountainous regions susceptible to landslides are advised to remain vigilant and heed weather advisories issued by local disaster management committees.
