The British School of Kampala (BSK) community is preparing for its upcoming charity event on November 21, aiming to raise crucial funds for the Mulago School for the Deaf. Now in its eighth edition, the annual community run brings together students, teachers, parents, and members of the public to support inclusive education and empowerment for children with disabilities.
Proceeds from the event will directly target pressing infrastructure and educational needs at the Mulago-based institution, which serves learners from nursery up to Primary Seven. According to Prossie Wanyana, the deputy headteacher at the school, the foremost priority is constructing a secure perimeter fence to ensure a safe learning environment.
Beyond basic security, the school is heavily focused on expanding vocational training opportunities such as tailoring and hairdressing. Because many deaf learners face barriers to higher education and traditional employment, these practical skills provide a vital pathway toward independent living and financial self-sufficiency.
Community integration remains another major hurdle, as few people outside the school gates understand sign language. To combat this isolation and help bridge the communication gap, the school hosts free sign language lessons every Friday for parents and the wider public.
For BSK, the event serves as both a sporting tradition and a practical lesson in empathy and civic responsibility for its students. Secondary School Ambassador Tessa Kassaga encouraged families and friends to turn out in large numbers to support the cause.
Supporters can participate in the initiative by joining the run or purchasing event T-shirts for Shs30,000. Read more about the initiative at the Daily Monitor.
