Religious and political leaders gathered on Friday, 23 October 2026, for the 12th Parliament’s inaugural inter-religious thanksgiving service. Hosted by Speaker Jacob Oboth, the event served as a platform for spiritual reflection and a call for renewed commitment to public service among Uganda’s lawmakers.

Delivering the main sermon, the Bishop of Bukedi Diocese, Rt. Rev. George Egesa, challenged Members of Parliament to lead with integrity, champion justice, and actively serve the most vulnerable Ugandans. He emphasized that the annual thanksgiving should be a moment for honest national reflection, warning that failing to reflect can lead the country astray.

Bishop Egesa pointed out that Uganda suffers from no shortage of policies or promises, but rather struggles with implementation. He directly criticized corruption, referencing recent media reports concerning irregular recruitments at Parliament and demanding decisive action against graft.

Speaker Oboth echoed these sentiments, reminding legislators that public trust must be honored through sound decisions and a steadfast commitment to the public good. He stressed that pressing citizen priorities—such as quality healthcare, education, employment, and the proper management of public resources—must remain central to parliamentary duties.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa also addressed the congregation, framing corruption as a deeply rooted moral crisis rather than merely a political talking point. Other faith leaders, including Hon. James Waluswaka and Imam Iddi Kasozi, underscored the importance of national unity, spiritual grounding, and responsible leadership that fosters genuine peace.
