Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has made her return to the public eye, attending a meeting of the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) at State House Entebbe. This marks her first major public appearance since stepping away from the political limelight earlier in the year.

Among’s political hiatus began more than five months prior when she withdrew from the race for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament. Her exit coincided with intense scrutiny and joint security searches at her residences in Nakasero, Kigo, and Bukedea. The investigations involved allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment, money laundering, and abuse of office, though she was never formally charged.

Following the searches, the Bukedea District Woman MP spent roughly 100 days under house arrest while luxury vehicles were briefly impounded by security operatives. Her withdrawal cleared the path for Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth to secure the ruling party’s endorsement for Speaker, while Thomas Tayebwa maintained his role as Deputy Speaker.

The tide turned in August when Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that President Yoweri Museveni had ordered her release from confinement and decided against prosecution, effectively forgiving her regarding the probes.

Attending the Tuesday CEC meeting places Among back among the ruling party’s top echelons. As the NRM’s Second National Vice Chairperson (Female), her presence at the high-level organ signals a potential reintegration into active party affairs following months of political uncertainty.
