The legal battle surrounding the Mukono Municipality parliamentary seat has suffered a major setback after six witnesses lined up against incumbent MP Betty Nambooze Bakireke sought to withdraw from the ongoing election petition.
The witnesses, initially prepared to testify in support of former candidate Daisy Sarah Sonko Nabatanzi, made the dramatic move on Monday before the High Court in Mukono. Presided over by Justice Godfrey Himbaza, the court was told that the decision to step back stems from mounting fear and alleged intimidation following a tense confrontation at the court premises the previous week.
Nabatanzi’s legal team is now facing an uphill battle to salvage the petition, which challenges Nambooze’s victory in the January 2026 parliamentary elections. The loss of these key witnesses threatens to severely weaken the evidentiary foundation of the challenge.
As the High Court continues to review the matter, the unexpected development highlights the high stakes and volatile nature of post-election litigation in the region. Further rulings on the withdrawal application are expected as court proceedings progress.
