The rapid commercial and hospitality developments springing up around Nsambya Police Barracks have sharply contrasted with the severe decay inside the facility. As new multi-story buildings rise in the neighborhood, occupants on top floors can now clearly look down upon the sprawling, rusty corrugated shacks and dilapidated structures that house Uganda’s police officers.
Regarded as one of the largest police accommodation facilities in East and Central Africa, Nsambya Police Barracks faces severe infrastructural challenges. Hundreds of officers contend with open-roof bathrooms, aging pit-latrines, and open sewage flowing directly through the residential areas. The chronic shortage of proper housing has historically forced personnel to improvise by erecting makeshift structures, commonly referred to locally as “mama ingia pole.”
The stark contrast between modern investments and the deteriorating state of the barracks highlights mounting pressure on the historic facility. Urban growth and high-rise developments in the surrounding areas have brought renewed attention to the urgent need for comprehensive redevelopment and improved living conditions for security personnel stationed at the site.
