Tragedy struck Nakasongola District when a security guard was shot dead and his firearm was stolen by a large group of suspected fish poachers. The violent incident unfolded at Madende’s Farm in Kikuuta Village, Lwabyata Sub-county.
According to the Savannah Regional Police, a gang numbering over 25 individuals reportedly invaded the ranch at around 3:00 am to catch lungfish in flooded areas. Ranch guards spotted the intruders and managed to intercept four suspects, recovering spears and stolen fish in the process.
During the operation, 22-year-old Tonny Innocent Okot, an employee of Axis Warriors Ltd, pursued fleeing members of the group. Shortly after, fellow guards heard gunshots and rushed to the scene. Okot was found fatally wounded with a gunshot to the groin and later succumbed to his injuries while being rushed for medical attention.
Police responded swiftly to the scene, registering cases of aggravated robbery and murder by shooting. Authorities confirmed that four suspects were apprehended and remain in custody, while approximately 20 others are still at large.
During subsequent searches, police recovered the stolen firearm along with two rounds of ammunition, leaving three rounds unaccounted for. Investigators also seized spears, torches, and about 20 pieces of lungfish. The deceased guard’s body was transported to Nakasongola Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination, as security forces intensify efforts to track down the remaining fugitives.
