Residents living near the Dei BioPharma Limited pharmaceutical facility in Matugga, Wakiso District, have been assured of swift and equitable compensation following a government directive to acquire 600 acres of land for the company’s expansion.
Attorney General Sam Mayanja addressed community members during a meeting in Gombe Division, Nansana Municipality, confirming that the land acquisition will strictly follow constitutional guidelines. He emphasized that genuine landowners will receive their payouts before vacating the area.
Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba clarified that the compensation process will be managed directly by the government, cutting out middlemen who might otherwise derail or delay proceedings. Technical teams from the Ministry of Lands are scheduled to begin community sensitisation and demarcation exercises across the affected villages of Wabitembe, Kiryowa, and Kigoogwa.
The land acquisition follows a directive by President Yoweri Museveni, prompted by international regulatory requirements mandating buffer zones between residential settlements and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. Investments Minister Aminah Mukalazi noted that local construction and land transfers within the designated radius have been halted to pave the way for the expansion.
Dei BioPharma founder Dr. Matthias Magoola explained that the additional land is crucial for setting up exclusive oncology units and active pharmaceutical ingredient lines. Expanding the current 400-acre footprint to 1,000 acres will help the facility meet stringent international standards required to export advanced medicines and vaccines to global markets, including Europe and the United States.
