Two state informers previously convicted on their own admissions in a high-profile fake bomb plot case have reversed course once again, confirming they will maintain their guilty pleas before the General Court Martial.
Defendants Hamza Lyavaala and Hamid Walusansa informed the military tribunal, chaired by Brig Richard Tukacungurwa, that they no longer wished to pursue their application to withdraw their admissions of guilt. The pair faces two murder counts stemming from violent incidents in Munyonyo and Kalerwe, which reportedly resulted in three deaths. Prosecution maintains that these operations were planned ahead of the June 3, 2025, Martyrs Day celebrations.
Just weeks prior, the duo had shocked the court by asking for permission to retract their guilty pleas. However, when the matter returned for a formal ruling, both men changed their tune. Explaining the legal flip-flop, Lyavaala told the court that his initial bid to alter his plea was merely a strategy to ensure he could directly testify during sentencing proceedings to strengthen his mitigation.
“Last time, I wanted to change it because I first wanted to give evidence during the sentencing proceedings to strengthen my mitigation,” Lyavaala stated to the court.
Co-accused Walusansa echoed a similar sentiment, confirming to the bench that his primary motivation was securing an opportunity to speak before the military judges deliver their final judgment. When directly questioned by Brig Tukacungurwa whether they stood firmly by their confessions, both men unequivocally affirmed their guilt.
With the about-face finalized, the military court declared that delivering a formal ruling on the withdrawal application was no longer necessary. The tribunal officially maintained the guilty verdicts for both individuals.
The General Court Martial has set November 2, 2026, as the definitive date for sentencing the convicts. Read the full details on the Nile Post.
