The Bishop of Bukedi Diocese, Rt. Rev. George Egesa, has issued a strong challenge to Members of Parliament, calling upon them to lead with unwavering integrity, champions justice, and actively serve vulnerable Ugandans. Delivering a powerful sermon at the 12th Parliament’s inaugural inter-religious thanksgiving service on Friday, 23 October 2026, the bishop emphasized that annual prayers must serve as moments for genuine national introspection.
Hosted by Speaker Jacob Oboth, the gathering brought together diverse religious leaders and legislators to dedicate the work of Parliament to God. Bishop Egesa cautioned that without self-reflection, leaders risk steering the country toward the wrong destination. He pointed out that Uganda suffers no shortage of policies or promises, but rather struggles with implementation and action.
Addressing the congregation, Egesa strongly condemned corruption, referencing recent media reports regarding irregular recruitment processes within Parliament and demanding tangible measures against such malpractices.
Speaker Oboth echoed these sentiments, reminding fellow lawmakers that public trust is a sacred responsibility honoured through diligent decision-making and commitment to the public good. He stressed that constituents look to Parliament for essential services, including quality healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa weighed in on the fight against graft, arguing that corruption should be viewed primarily as a moral crisis rather than merely a political talking point. Meanwhile, other faith leaders, including the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Seventh-Day Adventist Chaplaincy, Hon. James Waluswaka, and Imam Iddi Kasozi of Mawanga Mosque, emphasized the importance of cross-faith unity, peace, and responsible leadership free from intimidation.
