Ntungamo learners recently received a powerful lesson on discipline and decision-making from Bishop Ahimbisibwe. During a school engagement, the bishop recounted a mistake from his own childhood to caution young students against succumbing to negative peer pressure.
His warning comes at a critical time for the region’s education sector. Recent statistics reveal a stark challenge in student retention, showing that only 35 out of every 100 pupils in Ntungamo successfully reach the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) stage.
Education stakeholders continue to grapple with the factors driving high dropout rates before the completion of primary school. Issues such as poverty, lack of scholastic materials, and negative influences often derail young learners.
By sharing his own vulnerabilities, the bishop aimed to inspire resilience among the students. He urged them to remain focused on their studies, choose their friends wisely, and avoid behaviors that could cut their education short.
Community leaders and educators hope that such mentorship moments will encourage more pupils to stay in school and defy the discouraging retention statistics.
