Tragedy struck Agago District over the weekend when suspected armed Karamojong rustlers stabbed a local farmer to death in Mityena Village, Lapono Sub-county.

Area chairperson Wilson Otto identified the victim as Santo Ojok. According to local reports, Ojok had gone to tend to his sunflower garden early Saturday morning when he tragically crossed paths with the armed attackers who had reportedly staged an ambush near the fields.

Mr Otto explained that Ojok’s lifeless body was later recovered bearing severe stab wounds, believed to have been inflicted by bayonets. The fatal encounter followed an earlier livestock raid in which the rustlers attempted to make off with 13 goats from the village, only to be intercepted by alert residents.

The latest violence highlights a persistent security challenge in the region. Local leadership notes that attacks by suspected Karamojong warriors remain common across 14 sub-counties in Agago, with Lapono, Adilang, and Paimol bearing the brunt of the insecurity. Records show that at least six people have lost their lives to rustlers in the district since the beginning of the year.

In response to the recurring violence, the local government is reportedly drafting a comprehensive position paper to present to the central government. This document aims to detail the casualties and survivors while demanding official compensation for the affected communities.

Meanwhile, security forces have responded to the incident. Captain Ibrahim Kasule Sekitto, the Public Relations Officer for the 5th Infantry Division, confirmed the tragic attack and stated that a formal investigation is already underway to apprehend the culprits.
