Business owners in Uganda who suffered heavy losses due to destructive floods have issued a stern ultimatum to the government. The traders are demanding the immediate release of Shs 20 billion, which they claim was promised to them by President Yoweri Museveni as financial relief following the disaster.

According to the affected traders, a previously stipulated two-week waiting period has elapsed without any funds being disbursed. Frustrated by the prolonged financial distress and lack of communication, they plan to carry mattresses to the Office of the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, starting Wednesday, October 28. They intend to camp there indefinitely until their grievances are fully addressed.

Shifra Namatovu, chairperson of Farmers Centre and one of the leaders among the affected business operators, stated that they have complied with all bureaucratic requirements communicated to them by officials. Despite following every instruction, Namatovu noted that no compensation has materialized.

Organizers of the protest have urged security forces to exercise restraint and avoid using force, emphasizing that their demonstration will remain entirely peaceful. The traders are calling upon all victims of the floods to unite and demand accountability, hoping to prompt the government into finally releasing the long-awaited funds.
