ZOA, a Christian international non-governmental organization dedicated to assisting populations affected by armed conflict and natural disasters, has officially marked 20 years of humanitarian service in Uganda. Over the past two decades, the organization has maintained an active presence across the West Nile, Acholi, Karamoja, and Bunyoro regions.

The NGO’s localized interventions have addressed critical areas such as food security, sustainable livelihoods, education access, land rights protection, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). These efforts have consistently targeted populations vulnerable to displacement, poverty, and environmental shocks.

Speaking at a commemorative dinner held in Kampala, ZOA Uganda Country Director Dr. John Panga reflected on the organization’s legacy. He emphasized that the milestone represents more than just a timeline, celebrating actual lives transformed, resilient communities built, and strong partnerships forged.

“Behind our achievements are people whose lives have been touched by our work: children accessing education, families strengthening their livelihoods, communities securing their land rights and access to clean water, and individuals rebuilding their lives with dignity and hope,” Dr. Panga stated.

Adding international weight to the celebrations, ZOA International Chief Executive Officer Mr. Chris Lukkien traveled to Uganda. His itinerary included joining local staff and stakeholders for the anniversary events, alongside field visits to project sites to observe firsthand the tangible impact of ZOA’s community-level programs.

The milestone arrives as Uganda continues to shoulder the responsibility of hosting more than 1.5 million refugees. This ongoing demographic reality highlights the continuous necessity for immediate humanitarian aid coupled with long-term recovery and self-reliance initiatives.

Looking toward the future, ZOA Uganda outlined its upcoming 2027–2030 strategic plan. The roadmap prioritizes sustained backing for refugees and host communities, expanded operations in Karamoja, reinforced land rights governance, community-driven anticipatory action, and deeper collaboration with both local organizations and government authorities.
