Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has challenged committee chairpersons in Parliament to utilize regular field visits as a tool to bring the institution closer to the citizens. Speaking at a quarterly meeting of sectoral committee chairpersons, regional, and zonal whips held at Mestil Hotel in Kampala, Tayebwa noted that community engagement is vital for improving legislative debates and enhancing the public image of Parliament.

According to Tayebwa, visiting grassroots communities allows lawmakers to directly assess the implementation of government projects and gather firsthand information. He emphasized that the insights collected during these field inspections are crucial when members scrutinize ministerial policy statements and ensure accountability for public funds.

Beyond oversight, the Deputy Speaker called upon MPs to actively translate Uganda’s homegrown economic philosophy, known as Musevenomics, into tangible laws and budget priorities. He outlined five core legislative and oversight priorities, including promoting local value addition to halt the export of raw materials, funding production-focused infrastructure, and bolstering flagship initiatives like the Parish Development Model and Emyooga.

Tayebwa also stressed the need for securing tenure for land consolidation and championing regional integration to expand market access for Ugandan goods. Read the full story on Parliament of Uganda.
