The Office of the Supreme Mufti in Uganda has distributed Zakat to vulnerable members of the Muslim community in a major push for economic empowerment and sustainable self-reliance. Held at the office headquarters, the handover event brought together religious leaders, committee members, and joyful beneficiaries to witness the distribution of practical livelihood assets.

Rather than offering temporary relief, the initiative focused on equipping individuals with the tools needed to generate daily income. Beneficiaries received motorcycles for transport businesses, sewing machines for tailoring, welding equipment for metal fabrication, and financial capital to launch or expand small enterprises. Vetted carefully by the Zakat Department, the recipients included youth, women, and persons with disabilities.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Supreme Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Muhammad Galabuzi, emphasized that the core purpose of Zakat is to lift people out of poverty rather than foster dependency. He noted that providing tools of trade allows recipients to earn a dignified living and eventually transition into Zakat contributors themselves.

To ensure long-term success, the department implemented a monitoring framework and provided orientation in entrepreneurship, savings, and Islamic business ethics. Grateful beneficiaries shared how the support would transform their lives, with some planning to open tailoring workshops, others launching boda-boda operations, and some establishing metal fabrication units.

Closing the ceremony with prayers for the contributors and the nation, the Supreme Mufti urged Muslims to fulfill their Zakat obligations through trusted, accountable institutions. Read more about this initiative on Nile Post.
